Medieval castles

The massif bristles with perched castle ruins (Salm, Bilstein…) reached by short hikes.

On the borders of Alsace and Lorraine, the Vosges saw dozens of fortified castles rise; today fine ruins remain, perched on pink-sandstone spurs. Château de Salm above Senones, ruins of the Villé valley or the Val d’Argent: most are reached by a short forest hike and offer great views. A fun way to mix medieval history and walking.
