A monastery was founded here around 690 by Odile, daughter of Duke Eticho, who became the patron saint of Alsace. The present convent dates mostly from the 17th century; the famous Hortus Deliciarum manuscript was compiled here in the Middle Ages.
Chapels, the terrace over the plain and St Odile’s spring punctuate a visit to a place of worship that is still active. The site is ringed by the Pagan Wall, an enclosure some 10 km long made of around 300,000 blocks.
💡 Good to know
By car from Obernai or Ottrott (about 15 minutes, car parks at the top); the Pagan Wall circuit is done on foot.
