First recorded in the 12th century, the castle was ruined during the Thirty Years’ War after a siege in 1633. Given to Emperor Wilhelm II, it was fully restored between 1900 and 1908 by the architect Bodo Ebhardt.
The tour takes in the drawbridge, the great hall, the keep, a medieval garden and collections of arms. From the great bastion the view stretches to the Black Forest and, on clear days, the Alps.
