In 1914 the Feste Kaiser Wilhelm II was the most important fortification of the German Empire. The first German fort with its own power stations, it served as a testing ground for many innovations.
A Franco-German team has been restoring it since 1984 and a museum opened in 1995. Explore barracks, corridors and armoured batteries on a self-guided visit with a booklet, or book a guided tour.
