Matthias Grünewald’s Isenheim Altarpiece (1512–1516) is one of the major works of Western art. The museum, one of the most visited in Alsace, was extended in 2015 by the architects Herzog & de Meuron.
The collections range from archaeology, medieval art and the Upper Rhine Renaissance, with Martin Schongauer, to modern art. An underground gallery links the cloister to the converted former municipal baths.
